And who am I to argue?

Seems like sage advice from George Harrison. And he should know. Being a pretty decent Ukulele player and all.

Apparently whenever he was in Hawaii, Harrison would go around to all the shops and buy up as many Kamaka Ukes as he could get his hands on. He would then give them out to his friends.

In a letter written on Flea Market Music stationery in 1999, Harrison spells out why he thinks everyone should own and play a Ukulele.

Anyone who says you can’t rock out with a Ukulele has never heard Taimane Gardner play.

Check out this performance from the recent San Diego Ukulele Festival 2014.

I Bet it Sounds Huge

Michael Jones and his 12' Ukulele

Michael Jones and his 12′ Ukulele

All the way from Australia comes this tale of one very large Ukulele.

According to the Fraser Coast Chronicle:

The proud owner of a 3.6m-long ukulele, Mr Jones stopped at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on Tuesday for a get-together with members of the local ukulele club before heading off to the Cairns Ukulele Festival which starts on July 1.

For those of us living in the States and elsewhere, 3.6 meters works out to about 11.8 feet! Now that’s a big Uke.

Jones, known as The Living Poet, told the paper that he built the Uke in two nights and taught himself how to play in three weeks.

So what size would that Uke be considered, an Uber-Baritone?

Surf Music on a Ukulele?

Seems like the perfect match to me.

This is just too cool to be missed. It’s Dick Dale’s “Misirlou” on a Kala soprano Uke.

In case you’re interested, here’s the man himself playing the song.

Awesome.

Gonzo Ukulele

Artist Ralph Steadman playing the Ukulele

Artist Ralph Steadman playing the Ukulele

Cartoonist and illustrator Ralph Steadman, probably best known for his work with author Hunter S. Thompson, is a Ukulele player.

Who knew?

As you can see in this clip, he knows his way around a Uke. He first picks up the Uke at 3:40 in the clip and again at 4:45.

Now, if he’d only apply his cartooning skills to a Uke, that would be something. A Gonzo Ukulele for sure.
